In memory of Mauro Stronati

(1948-2024)

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge that Mauro Stronati, age 75, passed away on January 10, 2024. He served for many years as Associated Editor, Section of neonatology, of the Italian Journal of Pediatrics.

He started as a general paediatrician with a special interest in neonatology in 1970 with Roberto Burgio and Giorgio Rondini in Pavia. He had been working as Head of Neonatology at Mantua Hospital and lately, as head of the Neonatology, Neonatal diseases, and Intensive care unit and Mother and Child Department of the IRCCS S. Matteo Hospital, Pavia (Italy).

His research topics of special interest included prematurity and neonatal infections. He had been a mentor for many neonatologists, particularly in the field of neonatal and prenatal infections. After his retirement in 2018, he continued to publish various reviews and papers on many international journals.

He was President of the Italian Society of Neonatology between 2015 and 2018 and founder of the study group of the Italian Society of Neonatology on neonatal infections.

He was a superb speaker and for decades he gave lectures in major scientific meetings. His presentations were clear, easy, and clinically useful. The Italian neonatology has lost a significant figure. His friends and colleagues will keep a profound memory of an outstanding scientist and doctor. They will miss his personality, competence, sense of humour and kindness.
